The Teachers of STEM Initiative™ is an innovative response to support Indigenous women to succeed in STEM. Developed by The Stronger Smarter Institute, through funding provided by the National Indigenous Australians Agency the Teachers of STEM Initiative provides:


  • Support to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women to complete STEM teaching qualifications;

  • Professional development for educators seeking to improve the STEM educational experience of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students

What is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM in education can be applied across all subject areas and is about using a range of skills to investigate the world.

Education in STEM must provide Australia with both expert practitioners and a knowledgeable and receptive community*.

Who can access the Teachers of STEM Initiative™ support?

The objectives of the Teachers of STEM Initiative™ are to:

  • support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women to complete STEM teaching qualifications;

  • improve the STEM educational experience of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, particularly women and girls;

  • increase the number of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women teaching STEM in schools.

The Teachers of STEM Initiative will support two key cohort groups:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women working towards STEM teaching qualifications; and

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander educators and non-Indigenous educators that have an impact/influence on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander participants who are directly engaged with the Indigenous Girls’ STEM Academy student initiative

The Teachers of STEM Initiative™ will operate nationally and aim to achieve the project objectives through two key components:

  • Mentoring and Support Pathways; and

  • Professional Development
