Mathematics Hub IK Resources
We are pleased to announce that the Institute’s resources for embedding Indigenous Knowledges are now available on the Education Services Australia Mathematics hub. The Indigenous Knowledges (IK) in Mathematics project is a collaboration between Indigenous communities, the Stronger Smarter Institute and Education Services Australia.
The Stronger Smarter resources can be accessed on the Embedding Indigenous Knowledges page.
Mathematics resources
The resources are intended to inspire teachers of mathematics to see the connections between mathematics and First Nations peoples’ histories and cultures.
Indigenous Knowledges (IK) are shared so teachers of mathematics are provided with alternative ways to view mathematics content based in reality of histories and cultures.
Each interconnected theme provides a video of an Indigenous Knowledge holder or custodian sharing their Indigenous knowledge (IK) on Country.
Supporting resources provide advise on how to use these examples to work collaboratively with Indigenous teacher assistants and local community to localise perspectives for place-based mathematics.
Third Cultural Space Guide
We have also provided a guide working in the Third Cultural Space. The Third Cultural Space is a place where Indigenous perspectives and western world views are complementary to one another. It enables equal positions of power. Acknowledging and valuing Indigenous Knowledge and western knowledge equally supports First Nations students with engagement and achievement outcomes.
The Third Cultural Space creates a place for dialogue, where diverse cultural worldviews come together to form unique knowledges.
