The Stronger Smarter Approach™ honours a positive sense of cultural identity. It acknowledges and embraces positive community leadership, enabling innovative and dynamic approaches and processes that are anchored by High-Expectations-Relationships. HE-R honour the humanity of others, and in doing so, acknowledge one’s strengths, capacity and human right to emancipatory opportunity.
SSI has grown from a fledgling Institute to a powerful change agent focused on the core philosophy of developing “Stronger, Smarter” realities for Indigenous Jarjums (children) and communities, strong in identity and smart in all facets of academic education. The sense of being ‘stronger’ and ‘smarter’ has been demonstrated across the nation through our footprints with schools, communities and organisations.
Building upon this significant reach the Institute is able to offer a unique perspective, insight and access to a pool of Indigenous researchers, educators and community engagement experts. Our Research and Impact framework focuses on the cyclical process of Footprints, Weaving and Tracking.
Based upon footprints of internal and external research, project activities are woven together to enable and accelerate innovation in Indigenous education responses. Rigorous tracking adds to the knowledge base of what is known and informs future footprints.

Each Masterclass focusses on a different topic, led by Indigenous Knowledge experts, and leading participants through the latest research. Participants then develop their own Action Research projects to take back to the school, workplace or classroom to apply shifts in thinking to their own contexts.

The National Indigenous Australians Agency has supported the Institute with several projects. Current projects are the SSA in Communities project and Teacher of STEM Initiative.
Our partnership with the Adelaide Crows Foundation involved running a leadership and connection program as part of the Kuwa Circles program to engage female Indigenous student cohorts in STEM career pathways.
The Maximising the Middle Project, a unique initiave in Western Sydney, aims to strengthen school and community leaders' capabilities to design and implement strategies to suport middle years children and young people.
We developed resources for the ESA Mathematics hub to inspire teachers to see the connections between mathematics and First Nations peoples’ histories and cultures.
Our involvement in a review of the Let’s Count early mathematics program supported the resource to be more culturally responsive and build on the rich mathematical traditions of First Nations Australians.
We supported the evaluation of the pilot project for the Deadly Teens project. The evaluation involved consultation with local community Elders, students and families.
We supported the design of a process to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for the Future You project from the Australian Government Women in STEM Ambassador initiative.
The Institute ran a virtual session for students, STEM coaches and Curious Minds staff where we introduced the Kinnected Art Theory approach.
We have worked with AITSL on several projects. AITSL supported the development of the Introduction to Stronger Smarter Online Module.
The Institute worked with the team behind the film, In My Blood It Runs, to run discussion sessions at film showings.
